Plan · The occasion

The celebration: what we can promise, and what depends on the hotel

A private dinner on the sand, a cake on the right night, a boat for two at dusk. Some of these we can promise. Some depend on a hotel, a park authority or the sea. This page sorts them honestly, so you know before you book which is which.

Three kinds of arrangement

A

Ours to arrange

Private car, private guide, private boat on a river or to the islands, timing of the days, the restaurant table in a city. We book these directly and confirm them in writing.

B

The hotel's decision

Dinner on the beach, decoration in the room, a cake, music, flowers at the table. Each hotel has its own rules, and some change by season or by night.

C

Nobody's decision

Weather, sea state and the authorities. When a port authority stops sailings or the wind is too strong for a beach dinner, nothing we or the hotel do changes it.

A good celebration plan has most of its weight in A, a written confirmation for everything in B, and a fallback for C.

Private dinners

SettingUsually possible?What it depends onFallback

Before you book, we name the hotel and tell you in writing which settings it offers for your dates, what the menu looks like, and what happens if the weather turns. If a hotel only does beach dinners on certain nights, we plan the itinerary around that night.

Cakes, flowers and the room

  • Cake. Most hotels on our routes will make or order one. Say what you want written on it, and whether either of you avoids anything. Some resorts include a small cake for honeymoons; we do not count on it.
  • Flowers and petals. Rose petals on the bed, flowers in the room, a bouquet at dinner — available at most hotels, with notice.
  • Room set-up. A bath drawn with petals, a bottle on ice, a card in the room. Possible at most hotels; each item is listed in the quote so you can add or drop it.
  • Music. A musician at a private dinner is possible at some resorts and some restaurants; it is the arrangement most often declined.
  • Lanterns and fireworks. Whether sky lanterns or fireworks are allowed depends on the hotel and local rules; we do not promise them. In Hoi An, lanterns floated on the river are part of an ordinary evening.

Private boats

WhereWhat we arrangeWhat can stop it
Thu Bon River, Hoi AnA sampan with a boatman at dusk, about an hour, just the two of youFlooding in the rainy season
Perfume River, HueA dragon boat to Thien Mu pagoda for your party onlyHigh water in the rainy months
Mekong, Luang PrabangA long-tail boat upriver for the dayRiver level and fog early in the morning
Lan Ha BayA balcony cabin on an overnight boat; private small-boat trips from itStorm warnings — the authorities stop all sailings
Southern islands, Phu QuocA boat chartered for your party, swimming and lunch on boardWind and sea state; the captain decides
Rabbit Island, KepA boat for your party, about half an hour each waySea state

Whether a whole overnight boat can be chartered for a couple or a group of friends depends on the boat and the season; we ask when we quote rather than assume.

Sunrises and other early starts

Angkor Wat opens at 5:00, and the sunrise from the pond in front of it is the one early start we put on most Angkor itineraries. It is not private — others will be there — but a good guide finds you a quieter spot. One rule from the park's official ticket office helps a celebration trip: a ticket bought for the next day after 16:45 also lets you in the same evening for the sunset.

Other early starts worth making: Hoi An's old town at 7:00, before the day visitors; the deck of the boat in Lan Ha Bay at first light; the monks' morning alms round in Luang Prabang, watched from a respectful distance. None of these can be made private. What we can do is get you there before the crowd.

Timing the occasion

  • If the anniversary or birthday falls on a fixed date, tell us in the form. We plan the itinerary so that date lands on a beach or a slow day, not a travel day.
  • If you have flexibility, we can move the celebration evening to a night when the hotel offers the set-up you want, or to the full-moon evening in Hoi An.
  • For a group of friends, we plan the dinner where the group is staying, so nobody needs a car afterwards.
  • For a surprise, we keep every confirmation in the name of the person who wrote to us.

Where to go next

The beach calendar decides which coast your celebration evening will be on. The tours page shows four routes that already include one celebration dinner each. The pricing page explains how these arrangements appear in a quote.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Can you promise a dinner on the beach?

No, and we would be wary of anyone who does. It depends on the resort's rules and on the wind on the night. We confirm what the resort offers in writing, and agree the fallback in advance.

Is the celebration dinner included in the tour price?

Each of our routes includes one, listed as its own line in the quote with the venue and set-up. More can be added, each one quoted separately.

Can you arrange a proposal?

Yes, with the same honesty about what depends on the hotel. Tell us in the notes field and we will keep it out of anything sent to your partner.

Can a group of friends have a private dinner together?

Yes. For four to eight people the easiest setting is a villa terrace or a hotel garden. Beach dinners for a group depend even more on the resort's rules.

A month, the number of travellers and the occasion are enough to start. You get a draft route and an itemised quote, not a brochure.
