Siem Reap: Angkor at first light
The town beside the temples of Angkor, capital of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 15th century. For a celebration trip it means one or two early mornings you will remember and a pool in the afternoon — most comfortable from November to March.
At a glance
What Siem Reap really is
Siem Reap is a small Cambodian town that exists, for visitors, because of what lies just north of it. UNESCO lists Angkor as the remains of the successive capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century, over about 400 km²: Angkor Wat, the Bayon at the centre of Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm and Preah Khan among many others.
The temples are crowded at the famous moments — sunrise at Angkor Wat, sunset from the usual viewpoints — and almost empty at others. For a celebration trip we use that: one sunrise at Angkor Wat, because it is worth it once even with others there, then the quieter temples at times when the tour groups are elsewhere, and long afternoons at the hotel.
The town itself has good small hotels with gardens and pools, which matter here more than anywhere else on our routes, because the middle of the day is for rest.
Sunrise and sunset — the rules that help
The park opens at 5:00. Angkor Wat sunrise means leaving the hotel in the dark; your guide picks a spot by the pond in front of the temple and you watch the towers appear.
One rule from the park's own ticket office is worth knowing: if you buy a ticket for the next day after 16:45, you can enter the park that same evening for the sunset, and still use the ticket the following day. On arrival day, if your flight lands early enough, that gives you a sunset before the trip has properly started.

How many nights
Three. That gives you two full days at the temples — one starting with sunrise at Angkor Wat, one later and slower — and lets the arrival evening be free. Two nights work, but the second day becomes a rush. Beyond three, for a celebration trip, the extra day is better spent on the coast.
When to go
| Period | Season | What it means here |
|---|---|---|
| November – mid-March | Northeast monsoon: lighter, drier winds | Dry, clear mornings; the season for long temple days. |
| Mid-March – mid-May | Hot season | Very hot in the middle of the day. Temples at dawn only. |
| Mid-May – early October | Southwest monsoon: heavy rains, high humidity | Green and quieter, but wet; June averages about 215 mm and September about 290 mm. |
| October | End of the rains | Still wet early in the month; improving towards November. |
Siem Reap's annual rainfall averages about 1,405 mm, and three-quarters of Cambodia's rain falls in the southwest monsoon, according to Britannica. For a trip that continues to the beach, the overlap that works is December to March, when Siem Reap, the Cambodian coast and Phu Quoc are all dry.

Getting there
Flights arrive at Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport, opened on 16 October 2023 about 50 km east of the town to replace the old airport near the temples. The transfer is longer than it used to be, so arrive with time to spare and do not plan anything for the first evening except, possibly, the sunset rule above.
Luang Prabang has flights to Siem Reap, which makes a Laos-and-Angkor combination possible. From Siem Reap to the coast, our route goes via Phnom Penh to Kep, 173 km from Phnom Penh by road.

When to leave it out
- If neither of you wants to get up before 5:00. Angkor can be done later in the day, but the trip loses the hour that matters most.
- If walking several kilometres on uneven stone and steep steps is difficult. Some temples can be seen from level ground; many cannot.
- From April to May, if you do not cope well with heat. The midday hours are very hot.
- If you want a beach on the same stop. Siem Reap is inland; the coast is a full day away.
Routes that start here
Angkor and Vietnam's southern islands spends three nights in Siem Reap, then continues via Phnom Penh and Kep to Phu Quoc. For a combination with Laos, the Laos and Vietnam route can be adapted to fly Luang Prabang – Siem Reap; ask when you send the form.
Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Is the Angkor Wat sunrise worth the crowds?
Once, yes. On a second morning we take you to a quieter temple instead. The park opens at 5:00.
Where can we buy Angkor passes?
From the park's official ticket office, online or at the counter. We include a three-day pass in the quote.
Can we have a private dinner near the temples?
We do not promise one inside the park. Hotel gardens in Siem Reap are the reliable option; we confirm the place in writing.
How far is the new airport?
About 50 km east of Siem Reap. Allow for a longer transfer than older guides describe.
