Hoi An: a river town with a beach next door

An old trading port on the Thu Bon River, a lantern-lit evening, and a long sandy coast a short drive away. The most romantic town on our routes for three or four nights — between March and August. From October to January it is a different place.

What Hoi An really is

Hoi An was a trading port from the 15th to the 19th century, and UNESCO inscribed its old town in 1999 for how completely it survives: 1,107 timber-frame buildings, assembly halls, merchants' houses, a market and a ferry quay, and the Japanese covered bridge from the 18th century.

It is also, plainly, a tourist town. The central lanes are full of tailors, lantern shops and cafés, and from late afternoon they fill with visitors. The old town at 7:00 and the old town at 19:00 are two different places. For a celebration we plan around that: early mornings in the lanes with a guide, evenings on the river rather than in the busiest streets, and a hotel just outside the centre — on the river or among the rice fields — rather than in the middle of it.

The beach is the other half. An Bang and the long strand running north towards Da Nang are a short drive away, which is why Hoi An works both as a culture stop and, for the anniversary route, as the gateway to four nights at a beach resort.

The evenings

A private sampan on the Thu Bon at dusk is the simplest celebration Hoi An offers: a small boat, a boatman, the two of you and a paper lantern set on the water. It takes about an hour and needs no dressing up.

Once a month the town does more. On the 14th day of the lunar month, the full-moon evening, the old town switches off its electric lights and runs on lanterns from about 18:00 to 22:00, with flower lanterns floated on the river. It is busier than any other night of the month. If your dates are flexible by a day or two, we can move your Hoi An nights to include it.

How many nights

Three at the least, four if it is the only culture stop on your trip. One night gives you an evening and a rushed morning. With three you get one early morning in the old town, one free day for the countryside or the beach, one evening on the river and one for the celebration dinner.

On the 10-day anniversary route Hoi An gets three nights followed by four at a beach resort a short drive north — effectively seven nights in the same area, with one hotel change.

The mark for February is a 2: the official description for Hoi An already reads warm and sunny from February, but the Da Nang page still counts February in its rainy season and the sea is around 23.5°C.

Getting there

Fly to Da Nang, which has domestic flights from Vietnam's main cities and direct flights from regional hubs. The national tourism authority puts Da Nang airport 50 minutes by road from the old town.

From Hue, about 125 km and roughly three hours by private car over the Hai Van Pass, with stops. This is how the anniversary route arrives.

What it costs here

The old town ticket for foreign visitors is VND 120,000, in force since May 2023. It is a strip of five tabs, each one good for entry to one of the town's heritage buildings. Walking the streets is free; the ticket is for the interiors. My Son, the Cham temple site inland from Hoi An, charges VND 150,000 for foreign adults including the electric shuttle from the gate. Both tickets are included in our quotes. Check before you travel.

Hotels in and around Hoi An range from small riverside guesthouses to large beach resorts; the hotel is where the money goes, and we quote it by name.

When to leave it out

  • From October to January, if beach days matter. Rain and storms dominate, and the river can flood the lower streets of the old town.
  • If you dislike crowds in the evening. The centre is busy every night, and the full-moon night is the busiest.
  • If you want a resort island rather than a coast. The beach here is a long, open strand, not coves.
  • If you only have one night. The town needs at least one early morning to show you what it is.

Routes that include Hoi An

The 10-day anniversary route spends three nights here and four on the beach nearby. The 14-day honeymoon gives Hoi An four nights between the bay and Phu Quoc. The Laos and Vietnam route ends on this coast in April.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

When is the full-moon lantern night?

On the 14th day of each lunar month, in the evening. The calendar date moves every month; we check it against your dates when we quote.

Should we stay in the old town?

We usually suggest just outside it, on the river or among the rice fields. The centre is busy and noisy until late, and the old town is a short bicycle or taxi ride away.

Is Hoi An good for a beach holiday?

From March to August, yes, using the beaches a short drive away. From October to January, no; that is the rainy and storm season on this coast.

Can we see My Son as well?

Yes, as a morning trip, back by lunch. The Cham temple towers date from the 4th to the 13th centuries and are a UNESCO site.
