Halong Bay: one night on the water
More than a thousand limestone islands off Vietnam's northern coast, and the one place on our routes where you sleep on a boat. It is busy, it is seasonal, and in the right month one night here is the scene couples describe first when they get home.
At a glance
What the bay really is
UNESCO inscribed Ha Long Bay in 1994 and extended the site in 2023 to take in the Cat Ba archipelago: 1,133 islands and islets of limestone rising out of a shallow sea, a drowned karst landscape spread across Quang Ninh and Hai Phong. From the water it looks like no other coast in Vietnam.
It is also one of the most visited places in the country. In July 2024, when a storm closed the bay, VnExpress reported more than 18,000 tourists on Ha Long Bay that day. The central part of the bay, nearest the main harbour, can be crowded with boats in the afternoons. That is why, for a celebration, we use boats that sail into Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay — the national tourism authority itself notes that premium operators increasingly route there, for the same scenery with far fewer boats.
What you do on board is simple: arrive at midday, sail out among the islands, kayak or take a small boat into a lagoon, watch the sun go down from the deck, have dinner, sleep, and wake up to the islands in the morning. That is the whole experience, and it does not need two nights for most couples.
How many nights
One. A single night gives you an afternoon, a sunset, a quiet evening anchored among the islands and an early morning. A second night mostly repeats the first, and on a 10- to 14-day celebration trip it costs a beach day at the end.
Two nights make sense only if the bay is the reason for the trip, or if you are travelling in a borderline month and want a spare day in case the first is grey. A day trip from Hanoi is possible but spends five to six hours on the road for a few hours on the water; we do not plan it for celebration trips.
When to go
3 = settled · 2 = usable, with cool, misty or wetter spells · 1 = storm season or heavy rain. Method and sources on the beach calendar page.
| Months | Official description | Average rain (Hai Phong) | What it means on a boat |
|---|---|---|---|
| December – March | Cool to cold, misty, cloudy | 20 – 50 mm | Atmospheric, sometimes grey. Sea around 21°C in January — few people swim. |
| April – May | Warm to hot, clear skies, sunny | 95 – 200 mm | The clearest window. Warm enough to swim from the boat. |
| June – August | Stormy, hot, humid | 225 – 360 mm | Sailings can be stopped by storm warnings at short notice. |
| September – November | Mix of sun and clouds, warm to cool | 255 → 40 mm | September still in the storm peak; October and November settle. |
Storms here are not a theoretical risk. In July 2024 Quang Ninh and Hai Phong stopped issuing permits for tourist boats to sail and stay overnight as Storm Prapiroon approached; in July 2025 the Quang Ninh inland waterways port authority suspended all passenger departures from Ha Long Bay ahead of Storm Wipha. When that happens nobody sails, whatever the boat or the price.

Getting there
By road from Hanoi: roughly 160 to 190 km, 2.5 to 3 hours on the expressway, to the harbour your boat sails from. We use a private car and time the departure so you board around midday.
By seaplane: about 45 to 60 minutes from Hanoi, weather permitting. It saves time and gives you the bay from the air, but it is the first thing cancelled in low cloud, so we always hold a car as a fallback.
Coming back: boats return late morning, and the drive from the harbour to Noi Bai airport is on the same expressway, which is why an afternoon domestic flight south fits on the same day.
What it costs here
The boat is almost the whole cost. Overnight boats range from large ships with many cabins to small boats with only a few, and the price follows the cabin, the size of the boat and the route. We quote the specific boat and cabin by name.
Entrance fees are set by the province. The Ha Long Bay Management Board publishes VND 200,000 to 250,000 per person for a day route and VND 500,000 to 550,000 for one night on the overnight routes (VND 650,000 to 750,000 for two nights). Lan Ha Bay is administered from Hai Phong and charges its own fee. Fees are included in our quotes. Check before you travel; they are set by the authorities.

When to leave it out
- If you travel between June and September and cannot absorb a cancelled night. Storm suspensions come at short notice.
- If the only time you have is a day. Five or six hours in a car for a few hours on the water is a poor trade on a celebration trip.
- If either of you gets seasick easily. The bay is sheltered, but the small boats to the lagoons do move.
- If you want to swim from the boat in winter. From December to March the water is cool and the sky often grey.
Routes that include the bay
The 14-day honeymoon spends one night on a boat in Lan Ha Bay between Hanoi and Hoi An. The Laos and Vietnam route uses the same night between Hanoi and the beach. Both are timed to avoid the storm months.

Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Lan Ha Bay or Ha Long Bay?
Same landscape, fewer boats in Lan Ha. For a celebration we prefer Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long. The trade-off is a slightly longer transfer to some Lan Ha departure points.
Can we have a private dinner on the boat?
On many boats, yes, on deck or in a quiet corner of the dining room. What is possible depends on the boat; we confirm it in writing before booking.
Will we be able to swim?
From April to October, usually yes, from the boat or a beach the boat stops at. In winter the water is around 21°C and most people do not.
What happens if a storm cancels our night?
When the authorities stop sailings, no boat goes out. We move you to a hotel ashore or back to Hanoi, and the boat night is refunded or rebooked under the boat's own terms, which you see before booking.
